Wicca’s “summerland“, a reflection of the injustice caused by the City of Montreal, the wrath of a municipal employe and a right winged lawyer that opposes the Canadian constitution.
Montreal, Quebec, Canada – July 2, 2013
“OMG, it’s already 1 year today since Wicca’s incident… I still can’t get over the fact that you’re not here with me, I wish. 1 year and I still feel it was like yesterday. I’ll never get over it and the unjust corrupt system we live with. I’m sorry girl that you had to pay that price!”
This was Chris Papakostas’ Facebook update on June 15th, 2013. Hard to believe that a year has gone by since we all first heard about Wicca and started following her case. Who can forget the gut wrenching picture of Chris sitting on the floor of the courthouse as he surrendered his beloved dog? However, this story does not end there.
The City of Montreal accused Wicca of biting a passerby during an incident on the streets of Montreal in June of 2012. Chris is still waiting for his day in court. He finally had the opportunity to present himself in court this past May with his lawyer, Elaine Rosenberg to contest the fines issued to him regarding this incident. “I don’t think that they were expecting me to show up, much less with a lawyer!” said Chris. “They suddenly became flustered and asked for the case to be postponed. They now know that I am still around and will fight regardless of how long it takes.”
Chris has kept himself very busy as he awaits his day in court. Immediately after Wicca lost her life, Chris started a foundation in her memory. Wicca’s K9 Justice Foundation will help in providing affordable resources to dog owners for training, rehabilitation or legal assistance as well as veterinary fees for sterilization. They will also work to keep the public informed about current or upcoming animal control laws and by-laws across Québec and assist reputable certified rescues with both financial and legal needs.
“The response from the public has been encouraging and many are helping me in making my mission possible. We have had several fundraisers so far and have been able to make large donations of food and supplies to a few local area shelters.”
As if that wasn’t enough, Chris also decided to take on a new career path. He is now a certified dog trainer and owner of Seirios Dog Training Academy! He has spent the last year training with master dog trainer, Harry Kalajian and still continues to work with him in order to learn more about rehabilitating and modifying behaviors, particularly working with aggressive cases. “So many dogs are deemed dangerous and it is just not the case. They are often scared or lacking structure and they do not deserve to lose their lives because of this.” Chris also hopes to work with adoptive owners who are having issues integrating their new dogs into their new homes, a much better option than returning them to the rescue shelter where they came from.
Wicca may be gone but she is not forgotten. “Thank you to everyone who has supported me and have given a voice to Wicca and her story.” RIP baby girl.
Two vigils will be held on July 26th, 2013 in honor of Wicca and all the dogs who have lost their lives. For more information on the Worldwide Candlelight Vigil,
